Relative skull size as one of the factors limiting skull shape variation in passerines

چکیده

Despite a considerable interest of researchers to the issue variation in skull shapes birds and factors influencing it, some drivers associated with design features an entire bird body, which are important for both successful terrestrial locomotion flight, overlooked. One such factors, our opinion, is relative size (skull length relation body mass), can affect position body's center gravity. We tested effects size, allometry (i.e. absolute size), diet on shape. The study was conducted 50 songbird species wide range mass (8.3g 570g) dietary preferences (granivores, insectivores/granivores, insectivores, omnivores). Skull shape analyzed using 2D geometric morphometrics. revealed that similar patterns occur among passerines different sizes diets. predicted extent pattern as size. In effect likely due biomechanical constraints related flight.

The genetics of canine skull shape variation.

A dog's craniofacial diversity is the result of continual human intervention in natural selection, a process that began tens of thousands of years ago. To date, we know little of the genetic underpinnings and developmental mechanisms that make dog skulls so morphologically plastic. In this Perspectives, we discuss the origins of dog skull shapes in terms of history and biology and highlight rec...

Quantifying skull shape

This paper describes a technique for automatically quantifying the shape of the skull cavity seen on an axial slice in a CT brain scan. The development ofthis algontbm derives from the need to normalise CT scan data acqording to skull size and shape for the purpose of compar;lg new patient data with that from past cases. This algorithm uses image processing techniques to fmdthe h i e r edge of ...

patterns of skull shape variation in meriones persicus (rodentia: muridae) in relation to geoclimatical conditions

this study investigates skull variation in persian jird, meriones persicus (blanford, 1875) in relation to the geoclimatical conditions across its distribution range. the pattern of correlations between geoclimatical variables and geometric shape descriptors for 221 ventral crania was studied by landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques. the covariation between shape and geoclimatical va...

The size of selected human skull foramina in relation to skull capacity.

An anatomical study was undertaken in order to investigate whether the sizes of selected human skull foramina with significant venous compartments correlated significantly with skull capacity. A total of 100 macerated human skulls were examined to determine the diameter of the foramina and the skull capacity. Measurements of the surface area of the foramina were made using a computerised digita...

Effect of Skull Type on the Relative Size of Cerebral Cortex and Lateral Ventricles in Dogs

Volume measurements of the brain are of interest in the diagnosis of brain pathology. This is particularly so in the investigation hydrocephalus and canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), both of which result in thinning of the cerebral cortex and enlarged ventricles. Volume assessment can be made using computed tomography or more usually magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There is, however, some u...
